Sport in Action Apprenticeship Programme
As part of Proton's desire to see community transformation, Sport in Action is a new partnership initiative that aims to train and mobilise people of all ages by harnessing their passion for sport in a positive way.
In 2010 the Proton Foundation, under the direction of Steve Wright, Community Sports Development Officer, created Sport in Action, which initially focussed on building a partnership of organisations in Romania that could work together to develop sports programmes for the benefit of their local communities. Alongside creating a vibrant and active community through sport, the long-term aim is that a platform be created for healthy role models and education. Sport in Action hope to use this influence to provide education on healthy lifestyles including nutrition, self-respect and respecting one another.
Initial funding raised during the second half of 2010 was released to partners in order to buy vital equipment to launch the first phase of their sports programmes. Fund raising continues as Proton looks to assist Sport in Action partners to further expand their sport programmes during the spring and summer of 2011.

A key element of this initiative and working specifically with lead partner Teen Challenge Bucharest (a charitable organisation offering to teens and young adults a practical and complex solution to alcohol and drug addiction, and other kinds of dependence) Sport in Action are looking to launch a Sports Apprenticeship programme in July 2011. Our aim is to see young men chosen from the TC programme equipped and trained in sports coaching and community sports development here is the UK and then returned to practically outwork the theory within their local community. We are asking individuals, organisations or companies to consider sponsoring this apprenticeship scheme. The cost to put an apprentice through the year long programme is 7,200 euros; a small amount to pay to give one of these young men a fresh start and a career path.
